This significant event attracted over 50,000 delegates from over 170 countries, including government leaders, municipal representatives, international organisations, civil society, non-governmental organisations, and academics.
A key highlight for the ACC and Infrahub team was the Academy/Training session conducted on May 20th in collaboration with the Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI). This workshop, titled “Participatory Futuring for Informal Settlements and Booming Towns: Learning from African Cases,” engaged approximately 20 participants from various countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Mexico. This work was directly informed by engagements and research under the African Urban Futures project run jointly by Utrecht University, University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and KDI.
The workshop centred on participatory planning in urban development, drawing insights from two notable case studies: the Dallas ISILI project by KDI in Embu, Kenya, and ACC's initiative on the Black River corridor in Cape Town. The discussions underscored the importance of involving residents in planning processes, especially in informal and peri-urban settlements, where their contributions are often overlooked.
Special shout-out goes to Vera Bukachi Legros and Wacera Thande from KDI for their invaluable efforts in co-organising and co-hosting this impactful event jointly under the African Urban Futures project.
